Shutters vs. Blinds: Which Is Right for Your Home?

It’s one of the most common questions we hear in our showrooms: should I get shutters or blinds? Both let you tilt slats to control light and privacy, so they can seem similar at first. In practice they’re quite different, and the right answer often depends on the room.
The short answer
- Choose shutters when you want a permanent, built-in look that adds architectural character, and you plan to stay in the home.
- Choose blinds when you want classic light control with more flexibility, a lighter look, or the ability to raise the covering completely off the glass.
How they differ
Look and feel
Shutters are mounted on a frame and swing open like small doors. They become part of the window’s architecture, almost like trim. Blinds hang from a headrail and read as a window covering rather than part of the house.
Clearing the view
Blinds can be raised all the way up, leaving the glass completely open. Shutters open by swinging their panels away from the window, which takes a bit of clearance in front of the window.
Durability and longevity
Shutters are among the longest-lasting window treatments you can buy. They’re easy to clean and stay in style for decades, and many buyers see them as part of the home. Well-made blinds last for years too, and they’re simple to update when your style changes.
Kitchens and bathrooms
Humidity matters. For blinds, EverWood® alternative wood blinds give you the look of wood while handling moisture. For shutters, Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ and NewStyle® hybrid shutters are built to resist warping in damp rooms.
Comparing the options
| Shutters | Blinds | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Built-in, architectural | Classic, tailored |
| Clears the glass | Panels swing open | Raises fully |
| Humid rooms | Polysatin or hybrid | Faux wood |
| Unusual shapes | Arches, angles and circles | Mostly standard shapes |
Which shutter or blind?
Among Hunter Douglas shutters, Heritance® real hardwood suits living and dining rooms and specialty shapes, NewStyle® hybrid shutters handle busy family spaces and wide panels, and Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ shutters stand up to bathrooms, kitchens and strong sun. Among blinds, Parkland® wood blinds bring natural warmth, and EverWood® handles humidity.
We also offer Alta shutters, part of the Hunter Douglas family, a smart way to bring custom shutters to more of your home.
Mixing both
Many of our clients use shutters in the main living spaces and blinds or shades in bedrooms, offices and bathrooms. Your designer can help you plan a look that feels consistent from room to room.
